Apple has been plodding along on AI initiatives, while OpenAI and Google are taking the lead with their automated solutions and upgrades. This agile trend is taking a new turn now, with Apple slowly catching up on Generative AI and how it can optimize the user experience. The company is now gearing up for WWDC and plans to roll out some major capabilities with iOS 18.

Apple is working on Siri advancements to provide AI-generated notification summaries and much more

Apple is finally moving into the Generative AI phase, and with this new development comes tons of reports about the feature upgrades that we might see as a result. They all seem very promising, signifying Apple's attempt to catch up. Through sources close to the matter, AppleInsider reports a new upgrade to Siri, where you can get an AI-generated summary of notifications you did not get a chance to go through.

In pre-release versions of Apple’s operating systems, the company has been working on a notification summarization feature known as “Greymatter Catch Up.” The feature is tied to Siri, meaning that users will be able to request and receive an overview of their recent notifications through the virtual assistant.

Greymatter appears to be the codename for the upcoming AI features. This feature reminds us of Amazon's Alexa, as the virtual assistant would generate daily summaries if prompted. The only difference is that Apple would use the on-device LLM model for Siri to be able to carry out this request.

If allowed, the summaries could be extended to events, locations, and even contacts, increasing the feature utility to more than mere notifications. The company, however, would give the option to disable the feature and maintain its stance on ensuring privacy. Apple might be crawling along on the AI front, but the tech giant takes the lead when it comes to users' privacy and initiatives to safeguard that.

Along with the Greymatter for Siri, Apple will bring a more natural voice to the virtual assistant to bridge the gap between interactions and make them feel more realistic. We are also expecting Apple to improve speech-to-text conversion abilities and prominently upgrade photo editing. Additionally, Apple might replace the Retouch tool with Clean Up, which would essentially make any edits to clear up the background in an image, matching up with Google's Mac Eraser.

An earlier report speculated that Apple could introduce the AI features on iOS 18 as a preview or beta. This apparent plan shows the company's attempt to ensure it does not become part of the AI rat race until the upgrades are fully developed and ready to roll out. If it takes this approach, Apple's commitment to delivering products that undergo complete testing and tweaking before launch can be sensed.
