Apple might have taken its time to join the generative AI wave, but with WWDC being right around the corner, we are expecting some major artificial intelligence integration coming with iOS 18. The Cupertino giant always comes up with innovative ways to present initiatives, but given Apple's pace, we are glad that the technology will finally see daylight soon. While the news regarding the expected features has been doing the daily rounds, the company has creatively branded the new plans for AI features, calling it 'Apple Intelligence.'
Apple has come up with a new brand name for its opt-in AI services, making it stand out from the competition
As per the latest Bloomberg's Mark Gurman's report, Apple is set on rolling out its artificial intelligence initiatives for the iOS 18 and would label the features as "Apple Intelligence" instead of the usual AI, marking its place even when it comes to large language models. Unlike Google and OpenAI, Apple is not focused on bringing revolutionary and novel features but is taking a rather holistic approach to it and making it a part of daily use and for the functionality to come across as more natural.
The approach of going for Apple Intelligence as more useful and less forced will be well-received by consumers, especially with the features now coming in as an opt-in service and leaving people with the choice of whether or not to use the AI features. The company's focus on user consent also highlights the heed it places on protecting the privacy and security of its users.
Apple plans to use both on-device and cloud-based computing for its AI services, with a greater focus on on-device processing. An algorithm incorporated in iOS 18 will decide which task requires what type of approach, and the complexity of the task will play an important role in this decision-making.
As AI is the major update for the keynote to be held on June 10, we are most likely going to hear about the partnership between OpenAI and Apple to bring in an AI-infused chatbot similar to ChatGPT, which was recently confirmed as per various reports. Some of the other exciting features include AI-powered summarization for articles, meeting notes, and even text messages. Users can even ask for a recap of the notifications they missed out on, saving time and bringing ease to daily tasks.
Siri will also get an upgrade with the ability to perform functions within apps with a simple voice command and even get a more natural tone to allow for bridging the AI and human gap with the help of AI models. One feature that will sit well with the younger generation is the creation of custom emojis. Additionally, the photo editing would be enhanced, and the Mail app would be revamped, among other advancements.
