iOS 18 Siri AI features to launch next year

Apple lags far behind the competition when it comes to introducing its iteration of generative AI technology. While the company has not yet showcased its work, the upcoming WWDC event could change everything with the release of iOS 18 and other updates. However, you might have to wait for the new features for as long as next year.

You might have to wait until 2025 to get the advanced version of Siri working on your iPhone

Apple is gradually picking up pace as it has possibly secured a deal with OpenAI to bring its custom GPT models to the iPhone. For the most part, OpenAI could help Apple build Siri further and integrate it on a system level to control apps and accomplish multiple tasks. As per information from Mark Gurman, advanced AI features for Siri might have to wait until 2025 to see daylight.

The company's WWDC event is right around the corner, and we presume that it will announce major or flagship features on stage. However, even after the release of iOS 18 in September, the features will not be readily available. There are two possible reasons for this approach, as the company does not want to be hasty with an unfinished product.

It was previously reported that AI features in iOS 18 will be labeled as beta or previews, which means that they will require work before the final version is rolled out. To be fair, this is a bold move from the company as it will avoid situations such as Google's Search Overview AI integration. Another reason is that the company and developers would have more time to work on the features. Possibly, the deal between Apple and OpenAI took its time, and Apple is forced to wait until next year for the features to be ready.

The report does not mention all features being delayed, but only AI Siri functionality. However, Siri will receive the most compelling upgrade, with the ability to control individual features in apps. Initially, Siri would be able to control only the stock apps, but eventually, third-party support will be added through a dedicated API. Note that basic Siri operations that involve AI will be performed on-device, but more complex tasks will be processed through cloud-based computing.

Apple is also working on its AI servers, which would make the entire process simple and more secure for the end user. We are not familiar with whether Apple will offer Siri through its own AI models or seek help from OpenAI. It was also recently noted that the iPhone 15 Pro models will be the base variants for running on-device and cloud-based AI features. What do you think of these new developments?
