The flagship Granite Rapids processor has seen a significant price drop since its launch last year, now sitting at just over $6,000.
Newegg Lists Xeon 6 6980P "Octacosahecta-core" Processor for Just $6,190; The Processor Carries Intel's Recommended Price Tag of $12,460 and Offers 128-Core/256-Thread Configuration
At the time of launch, the flagship 128-core Xeon 6 6980P Granite Rapids processor used to cost $17,800, a price tag that was already 50% higher than the flagship Emerald Rapids processor. However, the processor got a significant price cut early this year, dropping the MSRP to just $12,460. Once again, the processor has dropped significantly in price as seen on a major retailer, and it's not just another 10% or 20% reduction, but is now available at a whopping 50% discount.
We don't know how long this will stay like this, or whether Intel has really decided to keep its price down in order to compete aggressively with AMD's EPYC family, but checking prices in other regions indicates that this $6000+ price might stay for longer. We will come to that later, but if we are talking about the NA market, Newegg is probably the first one to list the processor for just $6,190. The processor is currently in stock and as you can see, it's the flagship 128-core/256-thread chip from the Xeon 6900P family, offering up to 3.9 GHz of boost clock, 504 MB of L3 cache, and is rated at 500W of TDP.
The 6980P uses Intel 3, which is a 5nm process node and uses the Intel Socket 7529. According to Intel, it can deliver 87% faster server performance than AMD's EPYC 9755 and can deliver up to 5.5X faster AI inference than EPYC 9005 series. The Xeon 6980P is definitely a strong processor, but its price cut might be due to lower demand since AMD has been rapidly gaining more server share recently. AMD recently saw a massive market share increase in Q2 2025, growing from 23% to 32.2% compared to Q2 2024.
AMD also claimed to be superior when it comes to offering the best performance chips in every segment, and this is clearly visible from the sales. As far as the pricing of Xeon 6 6980P is concerned, Newegg isn't the only retailer to sell it for half the price, but in Germany, the price can be seen dropping close to 6,000 Euros as well. A steep decline was seen in May when the CPU dropped from over 16,000 Euros downt to just €7,000. Another noticeable price cut was seen in June, and now the price has been steadily around €6,000 since then.
