Intel Xe3P Spotted In Latest Linux Kernel Patches, Confirms Pairing With Nova Lake CPUs

The latest Linux patches reveal that the Xe3P graphics is tied to Nova Lake, Intel's next-gen CPU family for desktop and mobile.

Intel Xe3P GPU Support Added in Linux and Mesa; Will be Integrated on Nova Lake, But Will Have Limited Ray-Tracing Support Across Models

Intel has begun its work on adding support for its "Xe3P" graphics architecture, which it announced alongside Xe3 recently. While the Intel Xe3 is confirmed for the Panther Lake series, the Xe3P was officially mentioned only for the Crescent Island data center GPU. However, the latest Linux Kernel patches confirm that Xe3P will be tied to Intel's Nova Lake as well, which is the official successor to Arrow Lake, set to launch next year.

Phoronix reports that Intel has just submitted its first Xe3P kernel graphics driver patches, which are expected to be included in the Linux 6.19 kernel cycle. These updates are done to expand the open-source support for its next-gen GPU architecture, and in this case, it's for the Linux users who will get day-one support when the Nova Lake arrives. That said, the Mesa 26.0 also added the initial support for Xe3P, and the patches merged reveal multiple Nova Lake families, including the S, U, H, HX, and UL variants, within the Mesa's Iris Gallium3D (OpenGL) and ANV (Vulkan) drivers. This confirms Intel is preparing a broad platform coverage for its next-gen CPUs and iGPU.

For now, the patches have introduced new PCI Device IDs, establishing the groundwork, and not the full feature enablement, but we can see that Intel did the same for earlier Xe3 implementations for Panther Lake and Wildcat Lake. That said, the Nova Lake Xe3P graphics support right now is experimental, and both the Kernel and Mesa drivers require a "force_probe" environment variable to manually enable the support. So, it's an indication that the code isn't yet production-ready, but with a few kernel release cycles, the Xe3P support should be stable.

One important detail here to note is that there will be limited Ray-Tracing support across Nova Lake variants. Not all the Nova Lake chips will support Ray Tracing, as Nova Lake-S, HX, and UL variants appear to lack the hardware for ray tracing. On the other hand, only Nova Lake-U and Nova Lake-H seem ready for RT.
