Intel's Open Image Denoise software now supports the Arrow Lake & Lunar Lake iGPUs, along with the Battlemage "Xe2" GPU architecture.

Intel's Open Image Denoise "ODIN" Now Sees Up To 2x Faster "Denoising" Performance With Added "Fast Quality" Mode, Supports Arrow Lake, Lunar Lake iGPUs & Battlemage Discrete GPUs

Intel's Open Image Denoise (OIDN) is an open-source library that utilizes the power of a GPU for the "denoising process." This involves eradicating grain or artifacts in a ray-tracing rendered image through different algorithms; it preserves the image's original quality and fidelity. The benefits of Intel's OIDN include faster rendering times as well, since with the "noise" getting removed, hardware resources are utilized in the best way possible.

Now, with Intel's OIDN version 2.3, the software has support for newer CPU architectures such as Arrow Lake & Lunar Lake along with Battlemage Xe2 GPUs, bringing a tremendous boost to its overall performance and quality. The software has experienced a 1.5-2x increment in real-time previews through the high-quality mode.

It is worth pointing out that Intel's Arrow Lake iGPUs will be based on the upgraded Alchemist+ or Xe-LPG+ architecture while Lunar Lake will be adopting the new Battlemage graphics architecture which is based on the new Xe2 design and brings with it an impressive 50% boost over Alchemist "Xe" chips. Then we have the Battlemage "ARC" discrete family which will show us the true power and potential of Intel's 2nd Gen Xe architecture. These are expected to debut later this year.

Here is how the release notes, which are released on Github, explain the changes:

  • Significantly improved image quality of the RT filter in high quality
    mode for HDR denoising with prefiltering, i.e., the following combinations
    of input features and parameters:
    - HDR color + albedo + normal + cleanAux
    - albedo
    - normal
    In these cases a much more complex filter is used, which results in lower
    performance than before (about 2x). To revert to the previous performance
    behavior, please switch to the balanced quality mode.
  • Added fast quality mode (OIDN_QUALITY_FAST) for even higher performance
    (about 1.5-2x) interactive/real-time previews and lower default memory usage
    at the cost of somewhat lower image quality. Currently this is implemented
    for the RT filter except prefiltering (albedo, normal). In other cases
    denoising implicitly falls back to balanced mode.
  • Added Intel Arrow Lake, Lunar Lake, and Battlemage GPU support

The new library is also hardware-agnostic and doesn't only work with Intel hardware but also from other vendors as well such as AMD, Apple & NVIDIA. With the new update, Intel's OIDN will become much more capable, and its open-source nature will encourage further developments, helping consumers and professionals who work with ray-tracing.
