Intel's flagship Granite Rapids-WS CPU has leaked out, the Xeon 698X, featuring lots of cores and a huge amount of cache.

Intel Xeon 698X CPU Leak Points To 86 Cores, Over 500 MB of Cache & 4.70 GHz Clocks, Making The Flagship Granite Rapids-WS Chip

Intel's Xeon 600 or Granite Rapids-WS family is expected to launch soon. Although Intel hasn't officially announced it yet, there have been multiple leaks with several SKUs breaking cover over the internet and various benchmark databases. Today's entry is of the flagship Xeon 698X chip, which has some juicy specs.

In terms of specifications, the Xeon 698X is going to be an unlocked SKU with 86 cores and 172 threads. The chip will be based on the Redwood Cove P-Core architecture with a base clock of around 2.0 GHz & boost clocks of up to 4.60 GHz. The chip features 336 MB of L3 cache and 172 MB of L2 cache for a total of 508 MB cache, plus it has a TDP of 350W.

For comparison, the current flagship Xeon workstation CPU is the Xeon W9-3595X, which is part of the Sapphire Rapids-WS lineup. The chip features 60 cores, 120 threads, 112.5 MB of L3 cache, 120 MB of L2 cache, a 2.0 GHz frequency at base, and 4.8 GHz frequency at boost. The chip has a rated TDP of 385W and can sip up to 462W at its maximum turbo speeds.

So, comparing the two chips, the Intel Xeon 698X Granite Rapids-WS CPU offers:

The Intel Xeon 698X was also tested within the Geekbench 6 benchmark test on a reference Intel RVP kit. The platform was equipped with 256 GB of DDR5 memory, but the performance scores aren't great, which is a thing with Geekbench 6, as it doesn't scale well beyond a certain core limit.

The CPU scored 2532 points in the single-core and 21,030 points in the multi-core tests. These are lower than a Core Ultra 9 285K with 24 cores and 24 threads, so we need some other benchmarks to evaluate the actual performance of this beast of a chip. Interestingly, the chip was boosting close to 4.8 GHz, which means that the 4.60 GHz frequency might not be final. We expect Intel to be introducing more processor lineups in the coming months, so stay tuned.
