Intel expects that, with its Panther Lake platform, the adoption of the "AI PC" narrative would be much more aggressive, reaching up to half of upcoming PCs.

Intel is Eager to Spread the "AI Fever" Into Consumers By Offering Capable Edge AI Performance

One of the major performance uplifts we witnessed with the launch of Panther Lake SoCs was in the AI department, credited to the integration of fifth-generation NPUs that deliver up to 50 TOPS of compute power. And it appears that Intel expects Panther Lake to be a dominant force in the race for AI PCs, as Intel Japan CEO Makoto Ohno discussed in an interview how Team Blue expects the client segment to evolve going forward. Interestingly, he believes that both upcoming PCs will be AI PCs.

It is also predicted that by 2026, this will exceed half, with one in two computers being an AI PC. However, given the current situation, reasons for choosing an AI PC include its high performance and the long battery life provided by the use of an NPU. In other words, it is important to reflect on the fact that people are not currently purchasing an AI PC in order to use its AI-related functions.

The AI hype hasn't fully diffused into client workloads, mainly because in frontier AI labs, the focus hasn't been much on edge deployment, aside from open-source solutions from China. At the same time, we have seen PC manufacturers themselves offering AI-focused services on their machines, such as Lenovo's Qira, which acts as a 'digital twin' across PCs, phones, and wearables. The main barrier to on-device AI ambitions has been the lack of compute power, but Panther Lake solves that.

Ohno claims that one of the primary drivers behind the Panther Lake CPU lineup was to "promote AI benefits" to the consumer segment, implying that companies are looking to offer AI-focused capabilities that provide a stronger case for customers. Intel aims to make AI PCs the go-to standard for every customer, giving capable services at lower prices by making computing much more affordable at the edge.

I want to quickly bring AI PCs to the point where they become the standard for PCs. At the moment, they are seen as high-end PC models, but we need to quickly create a situation where AI PCs are considered "normal." We also want to increase the number of AI apps that can take advantage of the capabilities of AI PCs, and create a situation where people will buy an AI PC because they want to use AI.

The AI PC narrative in general hasn't seen much of a great reception from the consumer audience, given that most of the users see such features as a mere 'gimmick', providing little practicality. However, with the agentic AI era and on-device computation becoming increasingly capable, we will eventually see a time when AI becomes an integral part of every PC, and the shift has already begun with Panther Lake.
