The data shows that the latest processors from both brands are equally reliable, and the failure rates are almost identical.
Puget Systems Tracking Reveals Nearly 2.5% Failure Rates for Latest AMD and Intel CPUs; Non-X3D Chips Reportedly Die More Often Than X3D Counterparts
We mostly see AMD's Ryzen X3D chips on the news as the processors are often reported dead by users. While the reports largely comprise the Ryzen 9800X3D, other X3D and non-X3D Ryzen processors also get cooked regularly. Surprisingly, when the failure rates are compared against Intel processors, something interesting is revealed.
Puget Systems data on its in-house builds and customers' systems reveal that both Intel and AMD's latest desktop CPUs have almost identical failure rates in the last 12 months Keep in mind that Puget Systems data isn't a full representation of the entire PC hardware industry, and the real failure rates are going to be different. Still, what it has tracked for its in-house systems builds and the customer systems, appears to indicate equal reliability of both platforms.
The data reveal that the Ryzen 9000 series CPU had a failure rate of 2.52% in the last 12 months, while the Intel Core Ultra 200 Series had 2.49%. So, according to Puget Systems, both are equally reliable, but from Intel, the Core Ultra 7 265K remains the most reliable chip with a failure rate of just 0.77%. While Puget Systems didn't reveal if it's also the best-selling Core Ultra 200 series CPU, we have seen the 265K selling more than any other Arrow Lake processor.
That said, what's surprising to see is that Puget Systems data reveals a higher failure rate of non-X3D Ryzen 9000 CPUs than the X3D family. The Ryzen X3D chips saw only 1.51% failure rate in 2025, and most of them were reported from Puget Systems' in-house builds. Even though this looks surprising, it's a possibility since Ryzen X3D chips sell like hotcakes, which brings more reports for the processor than the non-X3D chips.
We are definitely witnessing a rise in deaths of non-X3D Ryzen 9000 CPUs as well, and in the last month, at least four dead Ryzen 5 9600X cases have been reported.
