Intel's AI strategy has been plagued by inconsistencies and delays for several years, but it appears that CEO Lip-Bu Tan has taken charge himself, a move that aligns with his recent admission that Intel deserves better execution to overcome past complacency.
Intel's Former AI Chief Departure Was a Massive 'Blow', But It Appears That CEO Tan Plans to Take Matters Into His Own Hands
Well, for those unaware, Intel's AI chief, Sachin Katti, had recently left the company in a 'surprising' move and joined OpenAI, which left Team Blue's AI division in conflict. Since Katti had been the dominant force in showcasing Intel's progress with AI, his departure left a massive strain on Intel's AI plans; however, it appears that CEO Lip-Bu Tan has devised an even more aggressive strategy in place. Based on an internal memo spotted by CRN, Tan has acknowledged the recent 'inconsistencies' with the company's AI division, saying that he's now taking direct charge.
I recognize that these teams have experienced considerable change in the recent months. That’s why I’ll be working directly with the leadership teams to refine our AI strategy and ensure consistent execution of our advanced technology roadmap.
- Intel's CEO Lip-Bu Tan
Intel's AI division has undergone massive restructuring over the past few weeks, with two key executives departing the company, which may have put pressure on the company's approach to seizing the AI market. Now, with CEO Tan under direct control, Intel's leadership hierarchy has been drastically trimmed down, which could be a questionable move considering that upper management has greater control over the performance of divisions. On the other hand, Intel's CEO is admired for his 'previous turnarounds' such as that with Cadence, which is why this move is seen as an optimistic progress.
The former AI chief has been responsible for several of Intel's recent AI-focused announcements, which include the 'Crescent Island' AI chip solution, along with coming up with an annual product cadence. This gave us a 'glimmer of hope' that Intel had finally decided to unify on a single strategy, but with Katti leaving the firm, the momentum eventually loosened. Now that CEO Lip-Bu Tan will head the AI division directly, it will be interesting to see what sort of announcements or developments we see from the firm around AI moving forward.
