Finally, the Meteor Lake chips have also received the latest XeSS SDK update to enable XeSS Frame Generation.
Intel Meteor Lake Can Now Enable XeSS Frame Generation Without Needing Full XMX Tensor Engines; New XeSS SDK 2.1.1 Makes it Happen on XMX-Lite
Intel Meteor Lake iGPUs will now be capable of running the XeSS Frame Generation feature, thanks to the latest XeSS SDK 2.1.1, which arms developers with the latest APIs for improved performance. Meteor Lake doesn't have dedicated XMX tensor engines like the Discrete Arc GPUs or the Xe2-based iGPUs found on Intel Arrow Lake-H and Lunar Lake chips. Instead, it relies on the DPAS AI units, aka XMX-Lite, which is why Intel didn't release XeSS Frame Generation support for Meteor Lake initially.
The Meteor Lake chips utilize their DPAS units, which aren't as capable as Arc GPUs and can only be used for lighter ML inference. The iGPUs are based on the Xe-LPG architecture and have some constraints running Frame Generation, like the Arc A and B series GPUs. With the latest SDK, lower-precision neural weights, a smaller FG model variant, and DPAS-optimized kernel paths have been added to allow Meteor Lake chips to run FG even though it lacks full tensor hardware.
Users shouldn't expect very optimized Frame Generation performance on Meteor Lake, but at least now users can utilize it for improving fluidity in games. As spotted by Videocardz, Intel has reportedly removed the XMX requirement in the developer guide updates, and has also mentioned that the XeSS FG should now work with all GPUs, including both Intel and non-Intel cards with SM 6.4 support.
For those who aren't familiar with XeSS FG, it's Intel's proprietary frame generation technique to insert fake frames between real frames to smooth the gameplay. With the new update, the Meteor Lake-based laptops and handhelds can now deliver higher FPS, which is really helpful since they struggle to maintain high FPS. Developers with the new SDK can now patch their games to allow Frame Gen supported by Meteor Lake, and with the upcoming Intel iGPU drivers, XeSS FG support should arrive soon.
