Intel has introduced its 14th Gen Raptor Lake-HX 55W & Core Series 1 "Raptor Lake" 15W CPUs aimed at the laptop market.

Intel's 14th Gen Raptor Lake-HX 55W CPUs Target High-End Gaming Laptops While Core Series 1 "Raptor Lake" 15W CPUs Target Thin & Light Designs

The 14th Gen Raptor Lake-HX Refresh laptop CPU lineup continues to build upon the HX series with faster clocks and refined I/O support for high-end gamers. These CPUs will be targeted at high-end gaming solutions & certain SKUs will come with a spec boost, delivering more performance uplifts than 13th Gen chips.

Some of the latest features to expect on these laptops include WIFI7 / BT 5.4 support, Thunderbolt 5 capabilities, and more. Thunderbolt 5 is a big deal since it offers 3 times more bandwidth versus Thunderbolt 4 at 120 Gbps and 50% more bandwidth than DP2.1. It also enables more power to the laptops with 240W support and Thunderbolt Networking offers 2x the speedup over TB 4.0.

Intel 14th Gen Raptor Lake-HX Refresh CPU Familly: Faster Clocks For High-End Laptops

The Intel Core i9-14900HX will be the flagship offering which would offer the same 8 P-Core and 16 E-Core configuration as the existing Core i9-13900HX chip. This will be followed by the Intel Core i7-14700HX which will feature 8 P-Cores but a 12 E-Core configuration which is 50% more E-Cores vs the Core i7-13700HX and should provide a decent performance uplift.

The Intel Core i7-14650HX is also mentioned to utilize an 8 P-Core and 8 E-Core die which will be an upgrade over the 13650HX, a 6 P-Core and 8 E-Core configuration. Lastly, we have the Core i5-14500HX which will utilize the 6 P-Core and 8 E-Core, the same as the 13500HX.

Besides the core spec bump on certain SKUs, all 14th-Gen Raptor Lake-HX Refresh CPUs will offer a clock speed bump. The Raptor Lake-S Refresh chips feature a +200 MHz boost so we might see a similar clock bump in the laptop refresh. Besides that, the upgraded configs will also carry more cache that can help in gaming applications. The CPUs will also come with new designs that support the higher TDPs and thermal envelopes of these chips. It looks like 14th-generation laptops will mostly be using NVIDIA's RTX 40 GPUs since those are the most premium graphics solutions one can find on the mobility platforms.

Intel 14th Gen Raptor Lake-HX Refresh CPU Familly: Dragon Range Vs Raptor Lake Performance On Laptops

Comparing their chips to AMD's Dragon Range-HX CPUs, the flagship Core i9-14900HX is said to offer up to a 37% speedup in gaming at 1080p High settings and also ends up faster than the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D which is a 3D V-Cache boosted chip though these results should be taken with a grain of salt. Intel also showcases the 99% percentile FPS in which the 14900HX offers up to 58% faster performance than the Dragon Range chips.

Furthermore, Intel states that it is bringing APO (Advanced Performance Optimizations) to its Core i9 and Core i7 HX laptop CPUs which would provide up to an additional 18% gain in performance in titles such as Metro Exodus. More titles will be added to the APO list soon such as F1 222, Strange Brigade, World War Z, Dirt 5, and World of Warcraft over the already existing Rainbow Six: Siege & Guardians of the Galaxy.

Intel Core Series 1 "Raptor Lake" Gets 15W SKUs For Thin & Light Designs

Intel has a total of 60+ HX laptop designs with more on the way but that's not all, the company is also introducing its new Core Series 1 low-power chips rated at 15W. There will be three SKUs in the line which include the Core 7 Processor 150U, Core 5 Processor 120U, and Core 3 Processor 100U. One should not mistake these for the Meteor Lake parts as those fall under the "Core Ultra" series and these are non-Ultra "Raptor Lake Refresh SKUs".
