M3 and M3 Pro MacBook Pro receives iFixit's teardown treatment

Apple's new base M3 MacBook Pro features a new look as Apple discontinued the 13-inch model. The machine is identical to Apple's 14-inch MacBook Pro with a base M3 configuration. The iFixit teardown reveals some interesting details on the internals and how it differs from the higher-end M3 Pro version of the 14-inch MacBook Pro. The publication also detailed how Apple achieved the Space Black finish.

iFixit's latest teardown takes two variants of the MacBook Pro into account: the base M3 version and the M3 Pro. The M3 Pro MacBook Pro is similar to the M2 Pro MacBook Pro from the inside, revealing a dual fan design. However, the M3 and M3 Pro variants are pretty different when analyzed in the teardown, and the difference can be observed in the X-ray images.

The M3 Pro MacBook Pro houses a dual-fan internal design to keep it cool during long editing sessions. However, the M3 MacBook Pro houses a single fan, similar to the discontinued 13-inch MacBook Pro. Furthermore, since the M3 is comparatively slower than the M3 Pro, it also features a shorter heatsink. Since there is a single fan, Apple expanded the logic board throughout to keep the ergonomics intact.

While the rest of the changes are similar, iFixit's M3 MacBook Pro shows that the M3 variant is missing a Thunderbolt port. The machine can be quickly taken apart through the usual pull tabs for the battery, screws, and ZIF connectors. Removing the HDMI port and SD card reader is impossible, while most components can be replaced easily.

One significant change that Apple implemented is integrating dual flash storage modules. Apple faced much backlash after offering a single flash storage module on the base M2 MacBook Air with 256GB of storage. However, since the base M3 MacBook Pro starts at 512GB capacity, the company used two 256GB flash storage modules. This will increase the read and write speed and offer faster performance if you are unfamiliar.

iFixit explained that users can not change the display of the MacBook Pro, which requires calibrated tools that only Apple has. You can also see Touch ID in the M3 MacBook Pro teardown from iFixit and a lid sensor connected to the motherboard. iFixit gives the M3 MacBook Pro a repairability score of four out of ten, taking into account Apple's Self-Service Repair program.
