With Hurricane Helene officially designated the deadliest storm to hit the mainland US since Katrina, the total quantum of its destruction is just becoming visible. Now, a seemingly inconsequential town in North Carolina that was recently hit by Helene is on watch for its potential to severely disrupt the global semiconductor industry, owing to the town's virtual monopoly over the mining of High-Purity Quartz (HPQ).
To wit, the town of Spruce Pine in North Carolina, with just 2,220 residents (as of 2022), constitutes a critical component of the global semiconductor industry, courtesy of its mines that yield some of the world's purest quartz that is then used to manufacture silicon wafers. In fact, Spruce Pine's two major suppliers - Sibelco and the Quartz Corp. - are responsible for meeting between 70 and 90 percent of the semiconductor industry's global requirement for High-Purity Quartz.

Yet, as per the reporting by Hunterbrook, at least some of the High-Purity Quartz mining facilities in Spruce Pine appear to have been affected by Hurricane Helene, with recent images showing a mine's flooded entrance.
While quartz is an abundant mineral, the purity of Spruce Pine's quartz is a distinguishing factor, as is the town's labyrinth of refining facilities.
While the town's two major suppliers are still assessing the situation, if the mining of High-Purity Quartz is halted for the foreseeable future, it would take at least several months to establish quartz-refining facilities at other viable mining locations, leading to unavoidable disruptions for the global semiconductor industry.

Of course, it is not just mine entrances that have been affected. The railway line has endured washouts and "catastrophic damage" at multiple junctures. What's more, a rail bridge over the Nolichucky River has been reduced to its pilings.
Additionally, the town's power system has been so severely damaged that parts of it will have to be rebuilt from scratch. As the inventory for electrical transformers in the US has been depleted to keep Ukraine's battered power grid from completely collapsing, the nation's lead time for these critical components is already approaching 120 weeks!
Hurricane Helene's pounding of Spruce Pine's High-Purity Quartz mining operations at multiple nodes can only mean one thing: the global semiconductor industry is on watch now for severe disruption.
