The mobile computing space saw Huawei witness an impressive 70 percent growth in the first quarter of this year, and now the company has seen a similar outcome in the foldable smartphone category, only this time, the figure is much larger. According to the latest data, the Chinese firm had a 257 percent year-over-year growth for Q1 2024, becoming the biggest vendor for this period. However, Huawei was not the only company that experienced a shipments surge in Q1 2024, so let us get into the details.
Motorola and Honor came out on top with up to a whopping 1,260 percent year-over-year growth
With Huawei’s Pura 70 series driving considerable momentum for the former Chinese giant, TecnInsights reports that it also witnessed immense success in the foldable smartphone space. Samsung, who is regarded as the king of the foldable category, saw its growth decline by 25 percent, with OPPO suffering the hardest with a 70 percent slump. Huawei may have seen a 257 percent year-over-year growth, but it was nowhere near the height of Motorola, which saw a mammoth growth of 1,260 percent in the Q1 2024 quarter.
Honor, Huawei’s former sub-brand, came in second place with a 480 percent growth, followed by Vivo, with a 331 percent figure. The Mate X5 was likely responsible for Huawei’s foldable smartphone shipments reaching a new high, and it plans to get even more eyeballs on its products with the rumored launch of its triple-foldable smartphone, which is scheduled to arrive later this year. What is remarkable about Huawei’s latest figures is that it achieved all of this while having its shipments limited to a single market.
With the imminent launch of its in-house operating system called HarmonyOS Next, which will reportedly arrive in September, Huawei’s popularity may skyrocket, as according to a previous report, the aim is to completely severe dependency on Google’s Android and form a new beginning. Apple, which has yet to launch its first foldable iPhone, might be nervous about these numbers.
The Cupertino giant recently introduced discounts on the iPhone 15 lineup in China, with price cuts going up to $318 as Huawei’s resurgence and an overall demand reduction are putting pressure on Apple’s annual shipments. With the arrival of the Mate 70 family later this year, the iPhone 16 will have to be loaded with impressive features to obtain a lead against Huawei’s flagships, so this chain of events could likely lead to a further delay in the foldable iPhone.
