Just like on the iPhone and iPad, you can check the remaining battery life on your AirPods by simply opening the Charging Case lid.
Check Your AirPods Battery Life on the Mac by Opening up the Charging Case Lid, No App or Tweak Required
If you own AirPods - literally any model at all - then you already know how easy it is to check the remaining battery life. Just open up the AirPods Charging Case lid near your iPhone or iPad and you’ll see a pop-up showing you the remaining battery life on both the earphones themselves and the Charging Case. If you are currently charging your AirPods, you can see the charging progress this way as well.
However, on the Mac, things are a little different. Opening up the Charging Case does nothing at all, it seems. But interestingly, while you might not get a pop-up, you can still check the battery life on your AirPods and its Charging Case. Do you need to download an app in order to do this? Not at all as it all happens natively in macOS.
Here’s what you need to do.

Step 1. Launch System Preferences from the Dock, Spotlight or by clicking on the Apple logo in the menu bar at the top.
Step 2. Now click on Sound.
Step 3. Click on the ‘Show Sound in menu bar.’
Step 4. Now click on the Speaker icon in the menu bar and you’ll see a bunch of options there.
Step 5. Simply open up the AirPods Charging Case lid and you’ll see the AirPods and its Charging Case battery life.
All you have to do is click on the Speaker icon in the menu bar and open up the AirPods lid in order to glance at the battery life. If you own a pair of AirPods Max, then simply take out the headphones from their Smart Case to check the remaining batter;, not as convenient as other AirPods models but it will work just fine.
With every release of macOS we expect Apple to at least add an iOS-style animation showing AirPods battery life and so far it hasn’t happened. Apart from that, switching audio between devices is not good at all especially if there’s a Mac in the equation. Whenever you are switching audio between an iPhone or an iPad, it’s automatic and seamless, but you always have to manually connect to the Mac from an iPhone or iPad. Why, Apple? Why?!
