Dec 4, 2025 at 05:51am EST
In the game 'Octopath Traveler,' a character named Astrid is shown with attributes like Max HP 300 and Max SP 45, and possesses learned skills such as 'Twin Shot Mastery' and a favorite dish of 'Noodles'.

Octopath Traveler 0 is the first entry in the series to feature a single main character as opposed to the eight characters of past games. This single main character can be fully customized at the beginning of the game.

During character creation, you can determine the character's appearance, Learned Skill, Favorite Dish, and three belongings. Below, you will find every option available, and the best possible choice to give the best headstart in the adventure.

Every appearance choice is merely cosmetic and has no real impact on your character. Pick any option you like best!

Learned Skill

Skill TypeMastery NameEffect
Attack SkillTwin Shot MasterySelect a Weapon and deal damage 2 times
Recovery SkillHealing Prayer MasteryGrant HP recovery to an ally and restore SP by 10%
Enfeebling SkillWeaken Foundation MasteryLower Physical Attack and Physical Defense of a foe for two turns

All three Learned Skills can be helpful depending on your character build and party composition, and are all viable choices, since you can also equip them to other travelers. However, considering the beginning of the game where character choice is limited, forcing you to rely mostly on your protagonist, some choices are better than others:

Favorite Dish

Each of the eight food choices grants a base bonus of Max. HP +10% and Max. SP +10% for 15 turns, plus one additional stat bonus.

The dishes are presented in a fixed 2x4 grid during character creation (four on the top row, four on the bottom). You can name these dishes anything you like, but their effects are tied to their position (reading left-to-right, then top-to-bottom):

Dish Position (Row, Column)Additional Bonus Effect
Row 1, Column 1 (Top Left)Physical Attack +5%
Row 1, Column 2Physical Defense +5%
Row 1, Column 3Critical +5%
Row 1, Column 4 (Top Right)Accuracy +5%
Row 2, Column 1 (Bottom Left)Speed +5%
Row 2, Column 2Elemental Defense +5%
Row 2, Column 3Elemental Attack +5%
Row 2, Column 4 (Bottom Right)Evasion +5%

Over the course of the game, you will be able to cook a lot of different dishes, each with its unique effects, which will often overlap with any of these choices. Pick the one that you believe will work best with your starting Job (e.g Physical Attack +5% for Warrior, Elemental Attack +5% for Scholar).

If you are undecided, the second choice, granting Physical Defense +5% for 15 turns, is a good universal option, as many enemies in the game, including mobs and bosses, use physical attacks.

Belonging Items

You can pick three items among eight different options to own from the very start of the game.

Belonging ItemItem Type / EffectDescription

RatatouilleItems / Grants the following effects for 15 turns: Elem. Def. +20% / Phys. Def. +15% / Fire/Ice/Lightning/Wind Resistance +15%A dish favored by a once-famous actor whose whereabouts are currently unknown.

There's value in any of the belonging items, but the decision hinges on whether you want an immediate stat boost or access to a quest item that can be obtained later through exploration.

The decisions made during character creation are not determinant, but they will shape your early game, so make your choices carefully.
