Use the HomePod or HomePod mini as an External Speaker for Your Mac
No matter how you slice it, it's a fairly obvious fact that the HomePod and HomePod mini are great speakers compared to whatever your Mac ships with. They offer excellent bass, clear mids and treble that doesn't pierce through your brain. And if you want to use one of the two HomePods as your Mac speaker then we will show you how to do it.
Tutorial
Note: Before you begin, your HomePod or HomePod mini must be properly set up using your Apple ID and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac. If that is the case, then start reading below.
Step 1. On Your Mac, click on the Control Center icon in the menu bar if you are running macOS Monterey.
Step 2. Now click on the audio source icon next to the volume bar as shown in the screenshot below.
Step 3. Here, you'll see a list of all the AirPlay speakers that are available on your Wi-Fi network. Select your HomePod or HomePod mini. In my case, I've boringly named it to Dining Room and Bedroom.
If you're using an older version of macOS, you can simply click on the speaker icon in the menu bar and you'll be taken directly to step 3 of the tutorial. This also works in macOS Monterey if you have the speaker control icon enabled by going to System Preferences > Sound and enable the Show Sound in menu bar option.
While this is a great way to listen to your music, watch movies, TV shows and listen to podcasts on a better speaker, but keep one thing in mind, you won't hear system alert sounds on the HomePod or HomePod mini if it's connected to your Mac. Those will still be exclusive to your Mac's speakers.
If you want every single thing to be routed to the HomePod, you can't do it. Apple doesn't allow it for some reason. But, you can always use a Bluetooth speaker or go wired if you disagree with what the HomePod and HomePod mini offers on the Mac.
