Disable location services on HomePod and HomePod mini

You can completely disable location services on your HomePod or HomePod mini for more privacy. We will show you how you can do it.

Don't Want Apple to Know Your Precise Location? You Can Disable Location Services on Your HomePod and HomePod mini

Location services get a bad rap for a lot of reasons. On one hand, it's absolutely essential for certain services to work at their best, such as Maps, Weather and so on. But on the other, it can be a privacy nightmare, especially if something like a flashlight app keeps on asking for your location.

Even a device like the HomePod and HomePod mini rely on location services to function at its best. But here, location services are used to give you local updates, for example, if you ask Siri what the weather is like, it will just use your precise location to give you a reply. If you think this is not what you want then you will be pleased to learn that you can turn off location services completely on the HomePod and HomePod mini.

Tutorial

Step 1. Launch the Home app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.

Step 2. Tap or click on the little home-like icon on the top left hand corner.

Step 3. Now select Home Settings to reveal a bunch of options.

Step 4. Scroll all the way down and disable Location Services.

Keep one thing in mind, if you rely on your HomePod to find your iPhone, iPad or Mac using Find My, then those features will still work. However, some features, like weather and maps might have some trouble working with the feature turned off.

Personally, I prefer keeping location services turned on. This makes sure that I get the best possible results when I'm asking the voice assistant questions and getting replies in return. Once that switch is turned off, your single question will turn into two as you have to be very precise with what you're asking Siri. If that does not bother you one bit, then you already know what to do.

Surprisingly, the way the feature can be turned off has been slightly moved around with recent updates to iPhone, iPad and the Mac. Previously, you could simply turn off location services for a single HomePod or HomePod mini you had in your home. Just tap and hold on the HomePod inside the Home app, scroll down, tap on Settings, scroll all the way down and turn off the toggle switch. But now, the feature is global which means it turns off services for every single HomePod rather than just one, unlike how it was previously.
