The first-generation Pixel Fold had a lot going for it, but there were a ton of cracks in the armor that could have been patched before the handset entered mass production, but it was not to be. Thankfully, Google has addressed those issues and various concerns with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold unveiling, and it manages to make all of that possible while making the foldable flagship the thinnest ever. There are a ton of hardware upgrades added too, as you will soon find out, with users being able to experience the company’s entire suite of generative AI features, so let us begin right now because there is a ton of ground to cover.
Google has kitted out the Pixel 9 Pro Fold with 16GB RAM as standard, making it plentiful to run various on-device generative AI functions
Let us start with the display first; the Pixel 9 Pro Fold features a 6.3-inch outer OLED panel, along with an 8-inch primary screen that can get extremely bright. Google claims that the inner display can reach a peak brightness of 2,700 nits, and if this was not a key metric for you to upgrade, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold also touts the biggest inner screen on a foldable smartphone ever. The design features an updated hinge and is 10 percent lighter than its predecessor at 257 grams.
Also, at 10.5mm thick when folded, it is thinner than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6. Unfortunately, in its pursuit of making the smartphone exceptionally sleek, Google has had to compromise on the battery capacity. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold sports a 4,650mAh, which is slightly smaller than the 4,821mAh cell powering the first-generation Pixel Fold. Thankfully, performance will not be the device’s Achilles’ Heel because it features the Tensor G4, the same SoC running in the rest of the Pixel 9 lineup, and 16GB RAM as standard.
The foldable smartphone comes with 256GB for the base model, but there is also a 512GB model. As the majority of you would have guessed, expandable storage is a ‘no show’ on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. For the first time, Google has added support for Satellite SOS, and with up to 7 years of annual software updates, you get to enjoy the latest and greatest additions. However, where it lags behind the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL is in the camera department. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s primary 48MP sensor is paired with a 10.5MP ultrawide-angle unit, along with a 10.8MP telephoto shooter with a 5x optical zoom.
There are two additional 10MP sensors present on the outer and inner displays, making it a total of five. Only two colors are being offered by Google at this time, Obsidian and Porcelain, but you will be happy to hear that pre-orders will commence today. As for the price, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold starts from $1,799, which is expensive, but is unchanged from the original Pixel Fold. This time, you get a ton of upgrades in the mix, along with design improvements.
