Google Gemini live demo failed twice during event

It is not uncommon for live demos to start behaving erratically during a presentation, but when there is a massive audience waiting to see what technology giants have concocted for the past year, you can bet that the stakes are abnormally high. Jess Carpenter and Dave Citron, two presenters at Google’s Pixel 9 launch event, were likely battling an inner meltdown when they tried to show off a live Gemini demo that refused to work in two attempts. Thankfully, the heart rates of both individuals probably stabilized when the results were successfully displayed on the third attempt.

Gemini on Android failed when attempting to work with Calendar, Tasks, and Keep

Dave Citron tried to give a demonstration of the latest version of Gemini Advanced using the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The smartphone took a photo of Sabrina Carpenter’s concert poster, with the presenter asking the digital assistant to check the calendar and see if he was free when the artist would visit San Francisco this year. Dave stated that Gemini Advanced takes relevant information from the image and cross-checks the Calendar app to deliver the results that he is looking for. Unfortunately, things did not go according to plan as the live demo started giving issues on the first attempt.

On the second go, Gemini Advanced failed to generate the required results yet again, giving an error of ‘Something went wrong, please try again (13).’ How Dave managed to keep a smile on his face for the audience is beyond us, but we are certain that he was attempting to fight back immense levels of turmoil. Fortunately, Dave preserved and decided to summon Gemini Advanced for the third time. Thankfully, his prayers were answered, and the results were generated, with the audience also applauding after a few seconds of awkward silence.

It is important to note that Dave successfully managed to get Gemini Advanced working on another device, suggesting that the Galaxy S24 Ultra may have been experiencing some problems. It is an exceptional feat that Dave had the foresight to expect that such issues may prevail, so kudos to him for keeping a backup smartphone in case things did go south.
