Google is heavily invested in generative AI for all the right reasons. The company has some really cool tools available on several of its Pixel devices and other devices like Samsung. Based on all the information that we have, the company seems to be looking to expand even more. The next thing that the company appears to be working on is called RealFIll, and based on the information we have received, this will be a big tool for those interested in photography.

RealFill by Google could be a game changer for photographers

Google has just filed a new trademark called RealFill last week. The trademark has gone through European Union Intellectual Property (EUIPO) and the US Patent and Trade Office (USPTO), and based on the information, the model is going to work by “Providing non-downloadable software using artificial intelligence (AI) for inpainting images; providing online non-downloadable software for creating generative models.”

If you are wondering how Google's RealFill is going to work, you can have a look at the images below, spotted by Android Authority.

It appears that this is not the first RealFill to surface because Google and a team of researchers from Cornell University have already worked on it. There is even a research paper titled “Reference-Driven Generation for Authentic Image Completion,” which talks about how this technology expanded an existing image by using five reference images.

If you are thinking about the capabilities of RealFill compared to some of the other image generators like Stable Diffusion, you can have a look at it below:

At the moment, RealFill is not as perfect as it needs to be. For instance, it is slower than some of the other options, and recovering the image from the final scene can be tough. Text is another issue that could arise when using this. Honestly, although I am really impressed reading about RealFill, I have to mention that just because Google has filed a patent does not mean that we will see this technology for sure. Patents are filed all the time, and while many products make it out of that phase, several don't.

There is a possibility that RealFill, in some capacity, might make its way to Google Photos or Pixel devices, but we are going to have to wait for that to happen. It is safe to say that even in its current state, it is really impressive, but it will need to be in a much better state to launch it for commercial purposes. You can read more about it here.
