A scene from 'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33' shows two characters amid a steampunk battlefield, with on-screen text identifying it as 'WINNER: ULTIMATE GAME OF THE YEAR' at the 42nd Annual Golden Joystick Awards.

The Golden Joystick Awards are consistently the awards show to kick off awards season for the video game industry, not just with how early the nominees are revealed, but with how early the show is. It's not even December, and the popular annual awards show has named its Game of the Year winner, and winner of many more awards. This year, though, several of those awards, along with the Ultimate Game of the Year winner, all have the same recipient: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Sandfall Interactive's debut title took home seven wins, including Sandfall being named the Studio of the Year, and Clair Obscur swept the performance-based awards as both Ben Starr and Jennifer English won for their performances of Verso and Maelle, respectively. It also won Best Storytelling, Best Visual Design, and Best Soundtrack, and was the only game to take home more than two awards, and it won in every category it was nominated for.

Though much of the night was focused on Clair Obscur, it wasn't the only game with a big win in the night. Ghost of Yotei took home two awards, including Console Game of the Year, while Hollow Knight Silksong took home PC Game of the Year and Best Indie Game (Self-Published).
