Game Boy emulator now available on the Apple App Store

Only recently, a number of changes on Apple’s App Store allowed developers to list game emulators on the platform. With the latest shift in the guidelines, a Game Boy emulator called iGBA has become available to download, likely being the first of many applications that might get listed shortly.

iGBA is a Game Boy emulator that allows users to download ROMs for both the iPad and iPhone

You can download iGBA: GBA & GBC Retro Emulator for free, and it will work as intended. All that is required is that users load and play ROMs that are downloaded to the device. Apple would have outright rejected this approach a while back, but things are much different now. The process for using iGBA is straightforward, but to load a game, you must find the title in the ‘Files’ app.

Afterwards, you can ‘touch and hold’ to bring up additional options. From hereon, tap on iGBA from the list of applications to load the ROM and begin playing on your iPhone or iPad. With modern-day chipsets, it is difficult to imagine that older titles will perform poorly on these devices unless they are not appropriately optimized for this platform.

You also get other features such as save states, fast forwarding, and haptic feedback. Some may not find the user experience enjoyable since it is embedded with ads, but developers need to monetize their hard work one way or another. Though there might be a little confusion in understanding Apple’s new App Store rules, adding iGBA to the platform suggests that it might not be an approval mistake.

This can mean that various apps similar to iGBA could arrive to the App Store soon. For now, try out the Game Boy emulator and tell us your thoughts in the comments. We understand that there are millions of those who grew up in the retro-gaming era, so this is the best opportunity to relive those memories again.
