This year, Samsung's focus has been on bringing new products, introducing innovations, and offering upgrades across its ecosystem. One such new addition has been the Galaxy S25 Edge, which is a slimmer alternative to the company's traditional smartphones. While the thin form factor should have been the highlight of the device, it became the point of controversy and backlash. Even though the company was able to bring in an impressively slim phone that was aesthetically appealing with its minimalist design, the outlook did come at a certain cost. A drop test recently evaluated the resilience of the S25 Edge against the rest.

A drop test of the new Galaxy S25 Edge shows how the phone would be able to handle accidental falls

Samsung had promised its users that it would introduce some noteworthy upgrades and bring meaningful innovations this year. The tech giant officially unveiled its Galaxy S25 Edge on May 13, which immediately stood out for its ultra-thin design, standing at only 5.8mm in thickness, making it the thinnest S device the company has ever brought forward. By bringing such a thin form factor, the company certainly displays engineering prowess, but such a design comes with its own trade-offs.

While the impressively slim design surely catches the eye, this comes with a heavy price tag and compromises that are often not immediately noticeable. The first one is the reduced battery life, since there is not much space to adjust a bigger battery. The battery issue and premium pricing are points of concern, but there are far bigger challenges regarding the device's durability. Bigger phones are said to be generally sturdier as the bulk allows for more withstanding of wear and tear situations.

In comparison to the thicker phones, the more refined form factor, such as that of the Galaxy S25 Edge, stands a lesser chance of surviving an accidental fall. To see how resilient the phone is, the S25 Edge was put through some bend tests to see how well it does in this regard, and it turns out the phone is able to handle bending quite well, emphasizing the strong structure and frame of the slim phone. However, a recent PBK review that has been posted on YouTube put the ultra-thin device on a real-drop test, and that outcome was indeed disappointing.

When it was dropped facing downwards from a typical phone holding height, the display of the S25 Edge cracked instantly, and what makes this more alarming is that even though the advanced Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 was on the phone, which is a premium glass offering enhanced protection, the device still did not survive the fall. Another test involved the phone dropping on its back a few times, wherein the rear glass that features the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 also cracked. A drop where the phone's edge was struck ended up causing dents along the frame.

While the display was fully functional during this testing period, compared to the standard Galaxy S25 models, the phone's performance under such conditions was underwhelming. The phone has a strong structural frame and has survived extreme bend tests, but in terms of durability, some might consider accidental drop survival a huge factor when investing in a phone. Nonetheless, the phone stands out with its modern design and thin form factor.
