The Galaxy S24 Ultra has so far impressed us with its durability, despite transitioning to a titanium chassis this year, as Samsung’s flagship has survived a series of drop and scratch tests. Although it has received an IP68 dust and water-resistance rating, one YouTuber decided to take things up a notch by freezing the 6.8-inch handset for six hours to see if it survives. Fortunately, the Galaxy S24 Ultra was not alone in this trial because the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Pixel 8 Pro faced the same challenge.
All three flagships endured the 6-hour freeze test, including the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which is a testament to how well premium smartphones are mass produced
Before all three smartphones were placed in a box that was later frozen, TechDroider wanted to demonstrate that the charging ports, speakers, and cameras were working correctly. With the checklist passed, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, along with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Pixel 8 Pro, was submerged in a box filled with water and was later frozen. After six hours, the thawing began, but the YouTube channel gave us a slight scare, believing that the rear camera lens of the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Pixel 8 Pro had shattered.
Fortunately, both flagships came out unscathed, and to ensure that the 6-hour freeze test did not have any deleterious effect on the internal circuitry, all three phones had their speakers, charging ports, and camera lenses checked. Initially, there was some fog build-up on the Galaxy S24 Ultra and the Pixel 8 Pro, but it eventually subsided and started working regularly. The displays of all three models were also functioning flawlessly, with no glitches spotted on the UI anywhere.
While it is impressive to see that all three phones were practically unphased from the freeze test, it is important to note that these three were submerged at a minimal depth. In deeper waters, where the element of hydrostatic pressure comes into play, it is difficult for the smartphone chassis to repel water, which is why the Galaxy S24 Ultra is only rated up to a depth of 1.5 meters. Hopefully, we will see how Samsung’s top-end model fares in the more elaborate tests, so stay tuned for more updates.
