It appears that Samsung has finally found a way to bring its Galaxy AI features to older Samsung phones with the One UI 6.1. A community moderator has now confirmed that the Galaxy S22, Galaxy Z Fold 4, and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are going to get the One UI 6.1 update in early May. This update will bring AI-related features that most people have been looking forward to.

Samsung is bringing Galaxy AI to Galaxy devices released in 2022 and 2021

This is great news for Galaxy S22 users as well as the users who have other devices that were released a couple of years ago. The moderator confirmed that these devices will be getting Galaxy S23-level AI features, which means that all the Galaxy AI features that Samsung has released so far will be coming to older devices.

Sadly, the same cannot be said about the Galaxy S21 users. Even though the phones will be getting One UI 6.1, not all Galaxy AI features are going to be present, and the ones present will likely require an internet connection as they will be running off the cloud.

The Samsung moderator talked about how the One UI 6.1, along with the Galaxy AI update, will be hitting the Galaxy S22, S22+, S22 Ultra, Z Fold 4, Z Flip 4, Tab S8, Tab S8+, and Tab S8 Ultra. These devices will be getting all the cool AI-based features like Generative Edit, Summary, Circle to Search, and more.

As far as the devices from 2021 are concerned, Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra, Z Flip 3, and Z Fold 3 are in line to get the Galaxy AI update. However, these devices are only going to get Circle to Search and Magic Rewrite, this might not be as impressive as some of the other AI-based features, but at least Samsung is working on making sure that older devices are not left out

Samsung bringing Galaxy AI to older devices is as impressive as it can get. The South Korean's AI model relies heavily on Gemini Nano, which allows the modern Galaxy S24 devices to use the AI locally. However, the model might have some issues running on devices from 2022 and 2021. My guess here is that there will be a lot of cloud processing involved in this, with some load given to the device to handle locally. Either way, it's still a very impressive achievement.

Another question I have is whether the future Galaxy AI features might not be coming to older devices. As we move forward, generative AI is going to be more complex and require more resources, and it's best if they are left to the more capable devices like the Galaxy S24 series and the upcoming Galaxy Z devices.
