Renowned game journalist Jeff Gerstmann, previously of Gamespot and Giant Bomb (which he founded and ran for fifteen years), revealed that there was a Fallout game in development at an Xbox-owned studio. However, he no longer believes it will be released, suggesting it may already have been canceled.
Speaking on "The Jeff Gerstmann Show", episode 196, he also claimed that Todd Howard and Bethesda as a whole would rather staff up than give Fallout, or Elder Scrolls for that matter, to another studio:
No, I think Todd Howard and the team probably have a pretty firm grasp of what they want to do with those specific franchises, and instead of assigning that stuff to another team, it would be more likely for them to staff up at Bethesda Game Studios to make sure that they have what they need to get those games done. There was a Fallout thing in development at another Microsoft-owned studio that I think is no longer going to see the light of day. But yeah, they will probably not do the remakes. I think those have been outsourced to others, like the Fallout 3 thing, which I think has been outsourced to an external studio. But, you know, new games will probably come from that brain trust, and I think that they probably will continue to have a pretty firm grasp on that.
The exceptions are the remasters/remakes. For example, the recent The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered was handled by Virtuos, and a similar development strategy will be adopted with the upcoming Fallout 3 remaster, which was once again "confirmed" this week by the appearance of a new McFarlane toy listing.
That said, when it comes to new installments of either franchise, Bethesda Game Studios seems keen to keep them in-house. Those who believe that Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas is the best installment in the franchise won't be pleased, but ultimately, it's their intellectual property, and gamers can only vote with their wallets whenever the new Fallout game is released (which won't be for several years, anyway).
