Square Enix revealed the release date for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World today during the first general Nintendo Direct event of 2026, which is officially set for December 3, 2026, on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. In a Summer Game Fest season of release date reveals that were all seemingly trying to avoid GTA 6, this spin-off Dragon Quest game is one of the few brave enough to launch within two weeks of Rockstar's upcoming blockbuster.

Of course, it's not like Dragon Quest Monsters is directly aimed at players who's tastes may have them more aligned with GTA 6, but the fact of the matter is that GTA 6 will overshadow the conversation around everything and anything in the video game industry when it arrives on November 19, 2026, for the remainder of the calendar year.

Every publisher seems adamant to avoid late-November/early-December release dates, but not Square Enix with its Pokémon-like spin-off for Dragon Quest. Today's trailer not only revealed a release date, but also showed off our first look at gameplay, showing the recruiting and battling system, and how players can fuse monsters together to create one massive creature.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is also meant to be something to help tide fans of the franchise over ahead of the next major game, Dragon Quest XII, and though we didn't get too much gameplay shown here, it seems very capable of giving players a worthwhile adventure ahead of DQXII.

It was first revealed last month with a short teaser, so to see it arriving in December is a solid turn-around time from reveal to release. Hopefully for Dragon Quest fans, it doesn't get lost in the craze of everything else that'll be going on in the industry at the time of its arrival.
