MediaTek will likely stick with ARM’s CPU and GPU designs this year when it officially announces the Dimensity 9400. Alongside one Cortex-X5 and three Cortex-X4 cores that were previously reported to be a part of the new CPU cluster, one tipster claims that the upcoming flagship SoC will also feature the new ARM Immortalis-G900 series GPU. However, when it comes to a direct graphics performance comparison with the Dimensity 9300, one alleged test result shows a minor 10 percent difference.
Tipster also shares the alleged Geekbench 6 multi-core score belonging to the Dimensity 9400; result is lower than the previous Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 performance leak
The exact Immortalis GPU model name was not shared by Digital Chat Station on Weibo, but with the Dimensity 9300 sporting the Immortalis-G720, it is possible that the Dimensity 9400’s part is called Immortalis-G920. As for its performance, that appears to be disappointing because the GFXBench Aztec benchmark apparently obtains 110FPS, whereas the Dimensity 9300 secured 99FPS, resulting in a modicum 10 percent difference between each generation.
However, we have noticed this lack of difference in an earlier comparison, where Apple’s M3 GPU also displayed poor performance when compared to the M2 in GFXBench. It was speculated that the benchmark suite required optimizations to reflect the chipset’s actual capabilities, so while the following is unconfirmed, it is possible that the software is not recognizing the Dimensity 9400 GPU correctly either.
The alleged Geekbench 6 single-core and multi-core scores have also been shared by the tipster, with the Dimensity 9300 scoring similarly to an earlier benchmark leak, obtaining nearly 10,000 points, though it is still slower than the record achieved by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. An earlier rumor also stated that the Cortex-X5, which is said to be a part of the Dimensity 9400 CPU cluster, is underperforming, claiming that this design has extremely high power consumption when clock speeds are raised and diminishing multi-core performance when those frequencies are lowered.
Unfortunately for MediaTek, it has little choice but to continue using ARM’s CPU and GPU designs for the long run, so while we recommend readers to treat this rumor with a pinch of salt, the Taiwanese fabless semiconductor manufacturer should further tweak the Cortex-X5 to achieve the right balance of power and efficiency. Assuming that does not happen, the company will lose all steam it generated with the Dimensity 9300, which Morgan Stanley analysts have stated is the most powerful smartphone chipset in the world right now.
