In what is reminiscent of the DeepSeek moment of early 2025, when the rest of the world collectively gasped at China's rapid progress on AI LLMs, TikTok owner ByteDance has now partnered with ZTE to launch the Nubia M153 prototype, which is being billed as the world's first truly agentic AI smartphone.
The ZTE Nubia M153 has phenomenal AI capabilities, all powered by ByteDance's Doubao AI agent, which is melded with Android at the OS level
Here are some of the specifications for the ZTE Nubia M153:
- The device is being billed as an engineering prototype only available via online orders.
- Priced at 3,499 Yuan or $494.
- Dimensions of 163.12mm x 77.04mm x 8.52 mm.
- A 6.78-inch LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 1264 x 2800.
- A 50MP main camera, a 50MP telephoto lens, a 50MP wide-angle camera, and a 50MP front camera.
- 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC.
- 15W wireless charging support.
- A 6,000mAh battery
As for the ZTE Nubia M153's software capabilities, it can perform various agentic, AI-powered tasks, all based on voice commands:
- Automatically scours various apps to book a restaurant reservation or purchase a ticket.
- Edits images, which include actions such as removing a pedestrian from the background.
- Compares online prices of products and then purchases those that fit the given criteria with the user's consent.
The smartphone's AI capabilities are powered by ByteDance's Doubao AI agent, which is wholly integrated with the Android OS. As per the available information, Doubao doesn’t integrate with apps through official APIs but uses system-level permissions to simulate human finger taps. Essentially, it reads the screen, interprets what it sees, and clicks buttons as a person would.
Of course, such a deep level of integration has its own pitfalls. For instance, Morgan Stanley recently noted that ByteDance would struggle to market its Doubao AI agent as OS-level integration "weakens [an OEM's] bargaining power in the supply chain."
It is perhaps because of this reason that ByteDance partnered with ZTE, a relatively obscure phone manufacturer, for its first significant foray into the AI-powered smartphone sphere.
