Crowdstrike has been making the headlines lately, not for its security provisions but for the massive global IT outage that happened last Friday. The impact of this outage is still looming for some Windows PC users. While the cybersecurity company took responsibility for the issue, fixed the root cause, and suggested fixes to resolve the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) issue, it has been recently asked to testify before Congress.

With companies struggling around the world to recover from the global IT outage, Congress has asked the CEO of Crowdstrike to explain how this happened

We have been hearing about the IT global outage since last Friday due to its massive impact on various organizations and businesses. The Blue Screen of Death issue happened after the company released a faulty cybersecurity update that crashed Windows worldwide and severely disrupted work for various institutions.

Out of all the industries, the airline industry seems to suffer the most and some companies still struggling to recover. According to a Reuters report, Delta had to cancel 4,000 flights since Friday amidst the ongoing issue, leaving thousands of customers stranded and causing major chaos. The report states:

CEO Ed Bastian on Monday said it will take the U.S. carrier another couple of days before its operations recover […] It has canceled over 4,000 flights since Friday, stranding thousands of customers across the country. By contrast, disruptions at other major U.S. carriers had largely subsided.

Seeing the adverse impact the IT outage had globally, the House Homeland Security Committee has asked, in a letter to Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz, to appear before Congress to shed light on where the issue stemmed from, what measures are being taken to rectify it, and preventive measures for any more similar grave situations in the future.

According to the Washington Post, Congress requires explanations from the company and asks it to present itself to testify before the congressional committee. The report highlighted how the committee would look at the issue with scrutiny and would want to ensure that a similar situation does not happen again:

A congressional committee on Monday called on the chief executive of the security company whose botched update triggered Friday’s sprawling computer outage to testify, according to a letter shared exclusively with The Washington Post, deepening lawmakers’ scrutiny of the incident.

Crowdstrike has been under immense pressure from organizations worldwide that faced Windows crashing down. Now, it will present itself before the committee to unfold the disastrous faulty update.
