Not every AI model belonging to Anthropic will churn out the results the way you hoped, but the company’s Claude Fable 5 will certainly attain a legendary status for those who wish to port all-time classic titles like Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour to iOS, macOS, or iPadOS without running into any headaches. One person reveals how effortless the job is, not to mention that the native version of the game is working on an iPad with touchscreen support.
EA made the source code for the game, making porting less of a hassle; Claude Fable 5 achieved what Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 couldn’t
The first piece of the puzzle was gift-wrapped and delivered by EA, as the video game developer and publisher released the Generals Zero Hour source code under GPL v3. Ammaar Reshi says that no emulator was required to finish the porting process, and that’s because the 2003 engine was compiled for the ARM64 platform, making it a seamless transition.
The details mentioned in the post on X reveal that Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 could not finish the task, not even on ultra code, a limitation that was bypassed by Claude Fable 5. Some may argue that Red Alert 2 would have been a better title to port to an iPad or iPhone, but sadly, Reshi says that EA lost the source for it, making the task highly complicated.
The native port of Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour is revealed to offer Campaign, Skirmish, and Generals Challenge, with the entire audio pack bundled as well. Best of all, touchscreen controls are present for iPad and iPhone, including dragging a selection box, two-finger camera pan, and pinch zoom.
For those wanting to experience Generals Zero Hour on Apple’s platforms, it’s mandatory to have a copy of the game installed on Steam. Afterward, a script pulls the data from your own account. As for the bugs, Reshi says that long sessions on an iPad can be terminated by the software due to low memory, with the app exiting to the home screen with no error dialog displayed.
It appears that Apple devices with more RAM will benefit from the Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour port, as the app can consume upwards of 3GB. If you want to give this an attempt, be sure to check out the step-by-step guide on GitHub and let us know how you fared in the comments.
