Bungie has just announced that Destiny 2 is receiving its final (and free) content update on June 9, after which there will be no more expansions or additions of any other kind. The developer admitted that, following the underwhelming release of the 2024 expansion, The Final Shape, only an episode in the slow but steady decline of the online first-person shooter game, it became clear that it was time to move forward and look toward new projects, which will now begin "incubation" work.
The update, called Monument of Triumph, is designed as a comprehensive celebration of player achievements that integrates experiences from across the whole history of Destiny 2. Central to this update is the introduction of Legendary Marks, earned through game-wide Triumphs, which grant players access to free armor ornaments, accessories, and weapon engrams, alongside a unique Title and ornament set for those with widespread deeds. The update also delivers small story beats and lore easter eggs while completely refreshing the activity hub by returning the Director to its place as the center of activities, leaving portal activities accessible via bottom nodes. Additionally, Pantheon 2.0 arrives as a permanent addition, staggering its boss activities across specific dates: the first slate of unique boss rosters opens on June 9, followed by the full lineup gauntlet on June 13, and encounter rotations on June 16.
Itemization and foundational activities across the Sol system are also receiving major overhauls. All raid, dungeon, and destination gear will feature full Tier parity, new perks, and set bonuses, with crafted weapons gaining a Tier 1–5 upgrade path. Planetside exploration is further altered by the introduction of "Distortions," which bring unique rewards and extra challenges to select destinations. The sandbox introduces new class abilities, including three new Aspects (Crackshot for Solar Hunters, Soul Siphon for Void Warlocks, and Shieldburst for Solar Titans), a Phantom Surge melee for Hunters, and new Strand Slicewire and Stasis Shatter grenades accessible across all classes. Furthermore, Exotic armor earned since The Edge of Fate is automatically upgraded to Tier 5 stats, alongside a wider tuning pass for Exotic weapons and armor functionality.
Monument of Triumph heavily overhauls the Portal difficulty system to eliminate choice paralysis, distributing distinct weapon pools across six specific ops categories and implementing escalating difficulty curves for Onslaught, The Coil, and Contest of Elders, the latter of which has been optimized from four laps down to three. Onslaught removes revive tokens, increases scrap drops, and introduces returning exclusive weapons. PvP players will see three new game modes in the Crucible, Arena, Glass Cannon, and Software, alongside a four-week rotation for Iron Banner and a revamped Heavy Metal mode featuring a third vehicle type, the Cabal Walker. Gambit is also elevated to an Ops category with its own unique rewards, tiered weapon reprisals, and armor set bonuses.
Significant ecosystem updates include the retirement of seasonal events and the relocation of legacy rewards, such as Festival of the Lost and The Dawning gear, to a centralized Monument of Triumph vendor. The Eververse shifts its Bright Dust rotation from weekly to daily and introduces a duplicate-proof Bright Engram Focusing system. True Exotic armor transmog also arrives in Destiny 2 on June 9, allowing legendary and lower-tier ornaments to be applied to Exotic armor in PvE environments. Finally, the update introduces an expanded rewards pass, permanently markdowns individual legacy expansions under a singular "Destiny 2: The Collection" bundle, and permanently reinstates the Sparrow Racing League (SRL), complete with original tracks, a new racing space, unique weapons, and earnable cosmetics.
Bungie will, of course, continue to work on Marathon. The studio recently reaffirmed its commitment to the extraction shooter, despite current player numbers being low, with an upcoming experimental PvE-only mode potentially attracting a new audience to the game.
As a side note, Bungie's owner, Sony, recently registered an $800M impairment loss on the company, essentially recognizing that its value is lower than the $3.6 billion estimated at the time of the acquisition in 2022.
