After its string of crewed launches stopped in 2022 in the wake of a surprising vehicle anomaly, Blue Origin is ready to resume crewed flights from Texas later this week. The firm announced the seventh crewed flight, NS-25, of the New Shepard rocket earlier today. The New Shepard is a single stage launch vehicle that allows space tourists to take a ride to the edge of the Earth and then land back in a capsule. This mission will be the seventh New Shepard crewed flight, as, after the rocket's anomaly, Blue Origin chose to fly it only once last year.
Blue Origin To Launch NS-25 Mission From Texas For First Crewed Launch Since 2022
The New Shepard is quite successful as a rocket since it has managed to fly most of its missions without significant scrubs or anomalies. New Shepard's first crewed flight was in 2021, three years ago, and it was quite iconic as it saw the firm's founder Jeff Bezos along with his brother, the first FAA certified female flight inspector and a space tourist fly beyond the Karman Line. For the inspector, Wally Funk, it led to her also becoming a commercial astronaut and the oldest person to fly to space.
New Shepard's anomaly took place in September 2021, when the rocket's capsule fired its pusher escape motor to jettison away from the booster after the latter failed a minute after lift off. The mission was an uncrewed one, but it was carrying yet another batch of science payloads for NASA. The full mission complement included 23 payloads, out which NASA had funded 18.
The New Shepard rocket's launch profile sees the rocket and its capsule separate post launch similar to an orbital class rocket. Additionally, it is also one of the few rockets in the world capable of vertically landing, which allows Blue Origin to rapidly scale up flights since it has to simply refurbish a rocket instead of build a new vehicle for each flight.
The NS-25 mission's crew is also historic. Apart from its first two flights, the New Shepard has flown six astronauts to space for all crewed missions. This time around, a private equity financier, an engineer, entrepreneurs and a former Air Force astronaut candidate all plan to fly to space. For the astronaut candidate, Ed Dwight, the New Shepard's NS-25 mission will mark his first flight to space since 1963 - the year in which he became an astronaut candidate.
According to Blue Origin, the NS-25's launch window will open early in the morning local time Texas. The mission wil fly to the skies on May 19th, for its first crewed launch since early 2022.
After it spent six months investigating the anomaly, Blue Origin had shared in 2023 that the reason behind the NS-23 mission's failure was high temperature on the engine nozzle. Rocket engine nozzles are cooled throughout the engine's firing since they are responsible for shaping high temperature exhaust gasses from the combustion chamber. For NS-23, the cooling system had been changed which led to the flight anomaly.
