[UPDATE] DCU master James Gunn himself has refuted the veracity of this rumor on a Batman game set in the universe created by Matt Reeves.

[ORIGINAL STORY] A new Batman game might be in development, according to a new rumor shared by film insider Matthew Belloni from Puck News. The article is behind a paywall, but the relevant excerpt was posted on Reddit:

Back in 2020, AT&T tried to sell the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment video games unit for a cool $4 billion. But months later, it was deemed “too valuable to unload.” Then, when Zaslav took over, many advised him to offload games. But Zaz still sees the games unit as strategic, especially as the various WBD divisions are beginning to collaborate more closely on properties like the upcoming Penguin HBO show and game, both seeded in the 2022 The Batman movie.

The game is reportedly set in the Batman universe created by Matt Reeves with the film released theatrically two years ago. While Belloni seems to link this project to the Penguin HBO show (due to air its eight episodes from September 19 to November 10), it appears unlikely that the game is actually centered on the Penguin himself unless it has a strategy focus. The villain certainly isn't known for his action prowess.

A Batman protagonist is certainly easier to imagine, especially after the flop of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, made by the studio behind the beloved Arkham trilogy. Even so, it is strange that Warner Bros. has approved a game set in a separate universe from the main DCU crafted by James Gunn, who previously said films, TV shows, and games would all be connected.

It may be a while until we learn more about this project. However, Batman fans can look forward to Arkham Shadow, a Virtual Reality sequel to Arkham Origins in development at Camouflaj for the Meta Quest 3.
