Base M3 MacBook Pro Only Features A Single Cooling Fan, According To Alleged Internal Layout, But It Is Nothing Out Of The Ordinary

Apple introduced three members of the M3 chipset lineup for the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro. However, there are a ton of internal differences found inside these portable Macs, depending on which model you purchase. For the base version, Apple is apparently using a cooling solution with just a single fan to tame the thermals of the M3, but this approach is not anything different from what the company has done in the past.

M2 MacBook Pro also featured a single cooling fan; all higher-tier Apple Silicon models feature dual-fan heatsinks

A comparison on X was shown by @lipilipsi, showing a different internal layout of the newly announced M3 MacBook Pro. He did make a small error when he stated that the image on the left belonged to the M2 MacBook Pro, but Vadim Yuryev was quick to point out the mistake, saying that the cooling solution belongs to the more powerful 14-inch M2 Pro MacBook Pro.

Using a single cooling might appear as if Apple is cutting corners with the $1,599 machine, but keep in mind that the M3 hidden under the heatsink does not need two fans to keep itself cool. The M3 features an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, so its peak power draw will be significantly lower compared to the M3 Pro and M3 Max, which can be kitted out with up to a 16-core CPU and up to a 40-core GPU.

Under these specifications, it makes complete sense to use a dual-fan cooling solution for the M3 Pro and M3 Max. Even then, we have seen in the past that the M2 Pro and M2 Max running in the previous-generation MacBook Pro models cooled by two fans often reached temperatures of 90 degrees Celcius and beyond, so the fan speeds had to be cranked up to bring thermals down to acceptable levels.

There is also the likelihood that Apple used a single fan on the M3 MacBook Pro to cut down component costs. Regardless, we recommend our readers treat this image with a pinch of salt, at least until the first teardowns of the 14-inch and 16-inch models are available in a few days.
