The plan to bring OLED technology to nearly every Apple product is moving expeditiously as the company is set to drop mini-LED for the first time this year on its redesigned M6 MacBook Pro. Fortunately, the display isn’t going to be exclusive to the Cupertino firm’s more premium machines, and in just two years, a report states that Apple intends to bring this technology to five product lines. Of course, as most of you may know, not all OLED panels will be alike, as we discuss below the devices that will be treated to the top-end displays.
The next Apple product to move to OLED after the revamped M6 MacBook Pro is likely the iPad mini 8
With LCD no longer expected to be found in Apple’s current-generation models, the firm’s key supplier of backlight modules, Radiant, is positioning itself to benefit from both legacy and emerging display technologies. The report from DigiTimes goes in-depth into Radiant’s plans to maintain healthy growth, while also stating which Apple products will be equipped with OLED technology from 2026 to 2028.
“Apple has long used OLED panels in iPhones and Apple Watches, and in 2024 began introducing the technology to iPads. Between 2026 and 2028, OLED is expected to extend gradually to iPad mini, MacBook Pro, iPad Air, iMac, and MacBook Air models.”
As mentioned above, the M6 MacBook Pro will be the first recipient of tandem OLED, but customers will have to pay a premium because the display upgrade, touchscreen capabilities, and a design change that also includes a revamped hinge will be exclusive to the M6 Pro and M6 Max models. It is also expected that Apple will announce a new iPad mini 8 later this year, and unlike the iPad mini 7, the tablet’s release, slated in Q3 or Q4 2026, will be accompanied by an LTPS OLED, not an LTPO one.
Samsung is said to be the exclusive supplier of the iPad mini 8’s OLED panels, with the manufacturer recently reported to have commenced the mass production of the 8.6-generation OLED panels that will eventually be found in the M6 MacBook Pro family. The MacBook Air is also said to be treated to these displays, but we feel that this transition will be the longest, not to mention that Apple is reported to have delayed the shift on its more affordable portable Macs to 2029.
After all, Apple might want to bring this technology forward, but it is also a matter of how well-prepared its supply chain is and how cheaply its suppliers are willing to provide this component. There are numerous factors that enable this transition, and not every element is within Apple’s control.
