Samsung revolutionized the 200MP camera on its smartphones, leading to other firms, mainly Chinese competitors, to follow in its footsteps. Apple, which typically adopts these specifications much later, is also rumored to jump onto the same bandwagon after keeping the 12MP sensor on iPhones for years. A new rumor claims that the company is testing a sensor with the aforementioned resolution. Whether or not the hardware makes the cut is another debate.
200MP sensor size details also shared, with Apple said to be testing a solution that’s bigger than the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s primary camera
A machine translation of Digital Chat Station’s post on Weibo states that Apple is testing a 200MP camera with a 1/1.2-inch size, making it larger than the 1/1.3-inch unit on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. As the majority of readers know, a 200MP camera with a bigger physical sensor has multiple advantages, with one of them allowing for an increased intake of light, resulting in more detailed images and reduced ‘film grain.’
Currently, Apple has incorporated 48MP sensors on all of its latest iPhones, which continue to capture high-resolution images, but a 200MP upgrade will open a ton of doors. For instance, this addition will allow for lossless zoom for up to 4x, with companies like Samsung allowing users to capture the full 200MP resolution and crop it later.
In the comments, Digital Chat Station clarified that Apple is only testing the primary camera, meaning the telephoto and ultrawide-angle units could be limited to 48MP. Regardless, a 200MP camera will undoubtedly introduce a ton of versatility to the user experience, but that all depends on whether Apple shows any interest in bringing the hardware to its iPhone lineup.
In related news, Apple is also rumored to have developed a LOFIC camera with a 20-stop dynamic range, but as mentioned above, there’s no telling if this technology will make it to its products. Assuming that it does, customers will have yet another reason to ditch their Android smartphones.
