The launch of the 11-inch and 13-inch M4 iPad Pro models would almost guarantee that Apple would end its slump of decreasing tablet sales and also hold a dominating position for slates featuring OLED technology. In the latest report, it is revealed that the Cupertino giant had a 72 percent market share for the Q2 2024 quarter, while its competitors were barely in the picture.
The 13-inch M4 iPad Pro had the highest shipments on a per-panel basis, making it the second consecutive time it has managed to remain the most popular tablet
For the second quarter, Display Supply Chain Consultants’ La Jolla writes that out of three players, Apple controlled the entire OLED tablet market, while Huawei and Samsung left picking up the crumbs as they only secured a share of 13 percent and 9 percent, respectively. Overall, the report mentions that OLED tablet shipments rose to 4.11 million units, making it a record-high figure and one that witnessed a whopping 356 percent annual increase.
“OLED tablet panel shipments rose 142% Q/Q and 356% Y/Y in Q2’24 to a record high 4.11M as Apple launched its highly anticipated 11.1” and 13” iPad Pro’s which feature the tablet industry’s first tandem OLED stack panels along with the thinnest tablets produced to date. Apple dominated the OLED tablet panel market in Q2’24 with a 72% share followed by Huawei at 13% and Samsung at 9%.
The 13” OLED iPad Pro led the market on a panel procurement basis for the second straight quarter with a slight edge over the 11.1” OLED iPad Pro. Each model had a 36% share in Q2’24. The #3 model on a panel procurement basis was the Huawei Mate Pad Pro 13.2” at 5%. LG Display and Samsung Display split the Q2’24 market on a panel supplier basis with a 41% share each.”
Even though Apple unveiled two iPad Pro models featuring an OLED panel, the 13-inch version had the highest shipments on a per-panel basis, followed by the smaller 11-inch version. At number three, we have Huawei’s HUAWEI MatePad Pro 13.2-inch with a market share of 5 percent. It is likely that if Apple had a cheaper OLED tablet available in its lineup, it would have secured third place, but we will have to wait a while for that, as the iPad Air family is expected to transition to this display technology in 2026.
Another interesting statistic to see is that Apple’s entire iPad range saw an impressive 24 percent year-over-year increase in revenue during its Q3 2024 earnings call, making it the highest for any of the company’s categories during that period. Unfortunately, Display Supply Chain Consultants estimates that Q3 2024 will see a minor hiccup, with a 5 percent shipments drop compared to Q2 but a 169 percent year-over-year increase to 3.9 million units. This figure will probably remain propped up by the M4 iPad Pro models, but Apple needs to expand this technology to the more affordable models to really get the ball rolling.
