While Apple is dedicated to working on new ways to combat smartphone addiction by introducing features such as Screen Time, Focus Mode, and other advancements that allow to cap the usage of apps, it has also ironically been actively lobbying regulators to limit the requirements placed on iPhone and the App Store. The dual approach is receiving a mixed reaction as the tech community seems to be confused about the active work on users' digital well-being and simultaneously focusing on gaining more control over its ecosystem.

Apple is said to be spending millions to shape regulations that impose restrictions on the iPhone and App Store

Apple is focused on bringing more features oriented toward user health by controlling smartphone addiction and usage. Now, its mixed stance is leaving users confused, as it appears the company is contradicting its own initiatives. It is reportedly spending millions on reducing the limit placed on the iPhone and App Store amidst the ongoing efforts by various states to regulate the usage of smartphones by teenagers.

According to the Wall Street Journal, earlier this year, Apple has been pushing back the efforts made to enforce age restrictions. It pointed towards one specific attempt in Louisiana where the Cupertino-based tech giant is said to have hired four more lobbyists that were reaching out to the legislator Kim Carver.

Carver responded to the efforts by suggesting Apple seemed to have panicked as the outreach was continuous till the legislator stopped responding. The specific bill was for taming teen social media usage by placing age restrictions on the App Store rather than on individual apps.

The report further stated that Carver was adamant about having the social media platforms carry out their responsibility. However, he was convinced by a Meta lobbyist to have the App Store instead carry out the restrictions and allow parents to control the age limitation aspect in a single place.

An Apple spokesperson opposed the proposed legislation and presented it as Meta's attempt to distract attention from its own issues related to child safety. The spokesperson claimed that Apple does provide parents with control over their app usage and allows them to restrict it, but if this information is shared with third-party apps, it compromises privacy standards.

Legislators were said to be under a lot of pressure which is why the bill did not include the requirement for the App Store for now, but it might be proposed again in another session. Companies are facing intense pressure to maintain the digital well-being of users while growing and sustaining their business.
