Apple's iPhone shipments increase 52 percent in China

The iPhone did not retain its usual upward trajectory, which ultimately caused Apple to drop its top position to Samsung in Q1 2024. China, which is regarded as one of the company’s most crucial markets, has witnessed waning demand, forcing Apple to introduce discounts as high as $318 on the latest iPhone 15 models to ensure that it maintains a healthy momentum before the iPhone 16 launch. Well fortunately, that plan worked out in the technology giant’s favor because, according to the latest report, iPhone shipments are up 52 percent compared to the same period a year ago.

The change in consumer behavior for iPhones could be attributed to long wait times for Huawei’s premium smartphones

Smartphone shipments in China continue to rise, with Bloomberg reporting that the latest figures from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology reveal that 3.5 million units were from foreign brands, with the majority of those shipments belonging to Apple. Demand for the iPhone started dropping in January and February, but those figures rebounded in March. While Huawei will likely retain its popularity in the region, analysts Steven Tseng and Sean Chen have provided their take below on how customers have changed their purchasing decisions with time.

“iPhone’s market share in China may soon stabilize, as our latest research suggests that after being pushed out by Huawei, Apple has made a comeback as Chinese consumers’ preferred smartphone brand. The reversal in user interest may be the result of China’s premiumisation trend amplified by consumer fatigue due to long wait times for Huawei’s top-end models, as more than half of survey respondents said they would be willing to spend more than 4,000 yuan ($790) on their next phone, yet only 33 percent currently own a premium phone.”

Apple’s iPhone decline in China could be nearing its end, with polls revealing that customers are willing to upgrade to the newer models. The report does not state if the discounts mentioned above that were applied to the iPhone 15 range earlier this month affected the consumer’s decision, but this would likely have resulted in a positive outcome.

The new iPhone 16 family is expected to be announced in September, but Apple will face heated competition from Huawei and its forthcoming Mate 70 lineup, which is rumored to be announced in October. It should be an interesting skirmish between the two companies, so let us see which one has the highest market share at the end of 2024.
