Apple is not having the best start to the year. Even though the technology giant generated a whopping $119.6 billion in revenue during its Q1 2024 earnings call, the same quarter saw a 10 percent drop in iPhone shipments. If things were not bad enough, the company also lost its top spot to Samsung, its biggest rival in the smartphone space. This only means that the iPhone 16 lineup launching later this year needs to be a smashing hit.
Apple and Samsung both saw reduced smartphone shipments in Q1 2024, but the iPhone maker suffered significantly more
Overall, IDC reports that Apple shipped 50.1 million iPhones in the quarter, attaining a 17.3 percent market share. However, the Cupertino firm fared better in Q4 2023, as not only did it ship 55.4 million units, making it slightly more than what it garnered in the latest period, but its market share was higher at 20.7 percent. In short, the company saw a 9.6 percent decline in shipments, which will likely make Apple’s investors nervous since the iPhone is the biggest revenue generator for the company.
In comparison, Samsung also saw its shipments drop this quarter, but it suffered nowhere close to its competitor, Apple. The Korean giant shipped 60.1 million units, securing a 20.8 percent share, falling just 1.7 percentage points compared to its market position in Q4 2023. A shocking statistic from IDC’s report was that Transsion, a Chinese manufacturer of smartphones, witnessed a massive 84.9 percent year-over-year change, as it shipped 28.5 million units in Q1 2024. Another company that grew in this period was Xiaomi, obtaining a 14.1 percent market share with 40.8 million shipped units.
Apple will not be oblivious to these declining shipments and is likely brainstorming on how to make its upcoming iPhone 16 family stand out from the pack, allowing the California-based titan to garner millions of shipments in the upcoming quarters. Unfortunately, JP Morgan analysts believe that the forthcoming series may not be successful as it will lack extensive AI features. Additionally, Ming-Chi Kuo had previously commented that the lack of differentiation between the current and newer models could mean that Apple may suffer up to a 15 percent shipment decline this year.
As for Samsung, it appears that incorporating a few AI features into the Galaxy S24 range made all the difference in the world, and it is no surprise that the company is bringing those features to older handsets, increasing the retention percentage of its devices. Then again, one lousy quarter for an entity like Apple does not make or break a company, and we will continue to monitor the next three quarters to see how it performs, so stay tuned.
