The base model of Apple’s iPhone lineup is often regarded as the least capable device, but the company has stepped things up with the iPhone 17, bringing in a truckload of improvements, including upgrades to the silicon, camera, battery, and several other areas. Here is everything you need to know about the latest flagship.
Display
The iPhone 17 ships with a 6.3-inch OLED and, for the first time, Apple has incorporated ProMotion technology, meaning that the device’s refresh rate can go up to 120Hz, while also clocking down to 1Hz to conserve battery life. The latest announcement also states that the device features a screen with a 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness, along with the company’s Ceramic Shield 2 protection, which offers 3x better scratch-resistance thanks to the Apple-designed coating that is bonded at an atomic level. The iPhone 17 also touts anti-reflective properties and has a 7-layer coating to make this possible.
A19 Chipset
The new A19 is fabricated on the latest 3nm process, and while Apple did not mention its semiconductor partner, previous reports have continuously mentioned TSMC and its ‘N3P’ architecture. The latest SoC features an updated Display Engine that drives the iPhone 17’s high refresh rate, plus it sports an upgraded NPU for Apple Intelligence. The increased memory bandwidth will also aid in the device’s generative AI capabilities. As for the CPU and GPU, the A19 is equipped with a 6-core processor that offers two performance and four efficiency cores, with five cores belonging to the graphics side of things.
Camera
The iPhone 17 has a dual-sensor configuration at the back and a single selfie camera at the front. The primary array houses a 48MP unit and a 12MP telephoto sensor with a 2x optical zoom capability. The front side sports a TrueDepth 24MP sensor, which doubles the maximum resolution of the iPhone 16’s 12MP shooter.
Battery
As usual, Apple did not mention the exact battery capacity of the iPhone 17, but states that the efficiency improvements made to the overall hardware, including the display and A19, mean that this particular model lasts up to 8 hours longer than the iPhone 16 in video playback.
Colors, Price & Availability
The iPhone 17 will be available in five colors: black, white, mist blue, sage, and lavender. The starting price of this model is $799, and for the first time, Apple has phased out the 128GB storage model for the base variant in favor of 256GB of onboard storage. While pre-orders are expected to commence this Friday, the actual release date is September 19.
