Apple has now publicly rolled out the iOS 26.5 update along with a host of other software updates for its sprawling ecosystem of devices, including iPadOS 26.5, watchOS 26.5, tvOS 26.5, visionOS 26.5, HomePod Software 26.5, and macOS Tahoe 26.5.
The Apple iOS 26.5 update is a hefty file, one that is big on bug fixes but light on material feature upgrades
Apple has now released the 11.98GB iOS 26.5 update file, bringing new wallpapers along with 2 feature upgrades:
- End-to-end encryption is now live for Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages between iPhone and Android users. These messages enable high-resolution image sharing, typing indicators, improved group chat features, and read receipts, but had lacked E2E encryption until now, especially where one chat participant was on an iPhone and the other on an Android device.
- The Maps app gets an all-new 'Suggested Places' section that is now populated with recommendations based on your location and recent searches. The update also lays the groundwork for ads within the Apple Maps that are expected to launch later in the summer.
Elsewhere, the update brings fixes to over 50 security vulnerabilities in iOS 26.5 alone. Did Apple use Clause Mythos to discover these?
Here is the actual blurb:
"This update includes the following enhancements:
- End-to-end encrypted RCS messaging (beta) in Messages is available with supported carriers and will roll out over time. For more information visit: https://support.apple.com/109526
- Pride Luminance wallpaper that dynamically refracts a spectrum of colors, is available for download
- Suggested Places in Maps displays recommendations based on what's trending nearby and your recent searches"
As mentioned earlier, Apple has also rolled out the iPadOS 26.5, watchOS 26.5, tvOS 26.5, visionOS 26.5, HomePod Software 26.5, and macOS Tahoe 26.5 updates.
For its part, the macOS Tahoe 26.5 gets the same Apple Maps treatment as that meted out within iOS 26.5. What's more, the App Store is now getting a monthly subscription option that locks in the lower per-month rate that is typical for yearly subscriptions, with the caveat that you pay that rate for the whole year on a month-by-month basis.
