Apple is gearing up to introduce its next-generation software update for the iPhone, which is expected to be the biggest in the device's history. So far, we have heard details on the design variations coming with iOS 18, along with a boatload of generative AI features. Apple is in talks with OpenAI again to bring its generative AI technology to iOS 18
iOS 18 is scheduled to be released to developers after the company is done with its WWDC 2024 event on June 10. The update will be accompanied by a handful of additional software for Apple's extensive product range. We have previously covered that iOS 18 will be Apple's biggest update the iPhone has ever received. The company has been working on a wide range of large language models but is also seeking outside help to make the platform more fuller.
Mark Gurman reports that Apple has initiated talks with OpenAI again to bring its generative AI technology to iOS 18. Apple is rumored to not introduce a chatbot with iOS 18, and OpenAI, being the pioneer in the industry, could offer ChatGPT-like capability on the iPhone. However, it depends on whether the two companies have struck a deal or if it is a no-go for OpenAI.
Take note that these are mere speculations as it is still unclear how Apple will utilize OpenAI's generative AI technology in iOS 18. The report notes that the two companies are working to secure a potential agreement for the technology. Another major aspect to consider is that OpenAI is not the only option for Apple, as the company has also been in talks with Google to bring its Gemini to the platform. It remains to be seen if Apple will work with OpenAI or Google to utilize their generative AI features for iOS 18. However, there is also the possibility that the company will pick an entirely new provider for its services, such as Baidu.
As mentioned, iOS 18 will bring major changes to the table, including redesigned visuals and AI integration on a system level. The company will announce the platform at its WWDC 2024 event on June 10. Do you think Apple will introduce a dedicated chatbot in iOS 18?
