Apple's pre-production cadence for the iPhone Ultra is moving ahead at full steam, with prototypes reportedly being sent to global carriers for testing.
A fresh tidbit has emerged against this encouraging backdrop, suggesting that Apple appears to have settled on a Liquidmetal hinge, a bigger battery, and a titanium frame for its upcoming foldable iPhone.
Apple's iPhone Ultra is rapidly taking shape, with the latest tidbits honing in on its Liquidmetal hinge, battery size, and frame material
We noted yesterday that the iPhone Ultra was now likely to sport a dedicated vapor chamber, which should allow for an impressive thermal performance.
Well, a Weibo-based tipster, Fixed-focus digital cameras, has now come forward with an interesting leak, suggesting that Apple has finalized a Liquidmetal hinge for the upcoming iPhone Ultra, going on to add that prototype units were now being sent to global carriers for testing and validation.
For the benefit of those who might not be aware, Apple's Liquidmetal is basically the commercial branding of an amorphous metal alloy, which is cooled rapidly during the manufacturing stage to prevent atoms from arranging themselves in neat crystalline shapes. This leaves the atoms in a chaotic and disordered arrangement that resembles the atomic structure of glass. The resulting metal is around 1.5x harder than stainless steel and 2.5x stronger than standard titanium, while still able to flex under stress.
Meanwhile, the tipster Ice Universe has proclaimed that "the weight of Apple's iPhone Ultra is bound to exceed" that of Samsung's comparable offering, dubbed the Galaxy Z Fold 8. For reference, Ice Universe believes Samsung's offering would weigh 201 grams.
The tipster Schrödinger has also chimed in, suggesting that the battery on the iPhone Ultra would exceed the size of the one on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is expected to ship with a 4,800mAh cell.
In summation, the increased weight of Apple's iPhone Ultra is likely a function of its bigger battery and titanium frame. Of course, this comes as Apple's apex iPhone model is all set for compromises elsewhere, which include skimping on Face ID, a telephoto camera, MagSafe tech, a physical SIM card slot, and the Action button.
