It is not just the form factor of Apple's iPhone that is slated for a major revamp come 2027. As such, the Cupertino giant is aiming for a massive overhaul of nearly every element of its iPhones as the decade progresses, including equipping its iPhones with multispectral imaging tech and a 200MP camera sensor, if the latest supply chain rumor is anything to go by.
Digital Chat Station comments on Morgan Stanley's 200MP camera sensor tidbit for Apple's iPhone coming in 2028, discloses active evaluation of multispectral imaging tech
We noted in a recent post that, according to Morgan Stanley, Apple will adopt a 200MP camera sensor with the iPhone 21 in 2028, and is looking to add STMicro as an additional supplier of LiDAR sensors, which are currently supplied solely by Sony.
Now, Weibo-based Digital Chat Station has discussed this tidbit in a dedicated post. We are reproducing a Google-translated version of the post below:
"Will the iPhone 18 miss out on a 200MP camera? Actually, it never had one. We previously mentioned that the Pro series engineering prototypes had a 48MP± "variable aperture" main camera and a 48MP± large aperture periscope telephoto lens.
The 200MP sensor is in the material testing phase, using a Samsung sensor. Another piece of information is that Apple is also interested in "multispectral" sensors; the supply chain is evaluating them, but testing hasn't started yet. Speaking of imaging, Chinese phone manufacturers are definitely more forward-thinking."
According to the Weibo-based tipster, the rumored 200MP camera sensor that is supposedly slated to go into the iPhone 21 has yet to appear in an iPhone prototype for real-world image testing. Instead, Apple is still evaluating a 200MP sensor supplied by Samsung.
In the meantime, Apple continues to test iPhone 18 prototypes with a 48MP main camera, replete with a variable aperture, and a 48MP telephoto sensor that features an elongated focal length and a larger aperture. This suggests that Apple is prioritizing low-light photography over raw resolution right now.
The tipster also adds that Apple is tentatively exploring multispectral imaging technology for future iPhones, but that this evaluation phase has yet to graduate to physical testing. The tech could improve the iPhone's object detection and image processing abilities.
