Apple Discounts Various iPhone Models In China In A Surprising Move To Pick Up Dwindling Sales In The Region

Apple reduces various products' prices in China

Apple hardly offers discounts on any products, with the price cuts introduced by the company’s long list of offline and online authorized retail partners instead. However, in a rare and perhaps necessary move, the company has decided to offer attractive concessions to customers living in China, likely to offset the continuous reduction of smartphone sales. With Huawei’s emergence in the region, things could get a lot more difficult, so offering discounts is one way to shift momentum to the company’s side.

Discounts can reach 500 yuan, or approximately $70, depending on which Apple product is purchased

Ahead of the Lunar New Year, which starts in February, Apple is running a promotion from January 18 to January 21, with discounts being applied to everything, including the technology giant’s top-tier iPhone 15 Pro Max. Other products such as Macs, iPads, AirPods, and Apple Watch models will also receive discounts up to 500 yuan, or $70, depending on what is purchased. While a $70 deduction might not appear as a whole lot, especially when Samsung is offering a $50 credit just for reserving any of the Galaxy S24 models, the actual decision might have caught several readers by surprise.

The Cupertino firm is rarely witnessed offering price cuts on products or services through its online or offline channels, but given that Apple suffered a double-digit dip in iPhone sales in China, not to mention that analysts have predicted that this slump will be followed through 2024, it makes sense to discount various products. TrendForce reported previously that one of the many challenges awaiting Apple this year is Huawei’s resurgence. The former Chinese giant re-entered its home turf with a bang thanks to its self-developed Kirin 9000S found in the Mate 60 series.

There were occasions where Huawei’s flagship offerings outpaced Apple’s iPhone 15 lineup in late 2023, which would make the latter nervous, for obvious reasons, as China is the biggest smartphone market in terms of sheer volume and holds paramount importance for Apple. The company’s Q1 2024 earnings calls will be held on February 1, just a day before the Apple Vision Pro officially goes on sale in the U.S., so we will know how well the company did in various markets.
