Apple will finally retire its mini-LED technology and current chassis for some MacBook Pro models as it aims to replace these machines with an OLED and redesign that includes a slimmer chassis, notch-less touchscreen, and a revamped hinge. Unfortunately, the latest report has already amplified the fears of potential buyers for next year because both changes are expected to be exclusive to the M6 Pro and M6 Max models, leaving the base variants out of the picture entirely.
Display sizes of 14 inches and 16 inches to remain unchanged for M6 Pro and M6 Max MacBook Pro models, but launch uncertainty still remains
We have been aware of Apple’s exclusivity plans for a while, as we reported in early October that the base 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro will not be treated to an OLED or a design thanks to evidence spotted in the upcoming model’s unique identifier. Now, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has a solid track record for Apple products, recently shared some disappointing news for those looking forward to the OLED and redesign, stating below that the M6 Pro and M6 Max MacBook Pro models will ship with the aforementioned changes, forcing customers to pay more.
“But two Macs on the road map do mark major shifts. I previously wrote about the first one: a revamped M6 Pro and M6 Max MacBook Pro with an OLED display, thinner chassis and touch support. That’s slated to arrive between late 2026 and early 2027.”
Gurman did not provide a concrete launch timeline in his latest ‘Power On’ newsletter because there is still some uncertainty in Apple’s supply chain concerning OLED production. For instance, Samsung is reportedly targeting the installation of necessary paraphernalia to begin mass manufacturing of these panels, with its completion period aimed for Q4 2026. Any slip-up from Samsung’s end could mean the M6 Pro and M6 Max MacBook Pro models could be delayed.
In related news, Gurman shared that Apple will launch the M5 Pro, M5 Max, and the M5 Ultra in the first half of 2026, and will be found in updated MacBook Pro and Mac Studio models. Additionally, an M5 MacBook Air and Mac mini are on the horizon, so there are plenty of product announcements to look forward to.
